Maternity Photoshoot with Husband: 5 tips help you capture wonderful moments

Maternity Photoshoot: The Role and Participation of the Future Dad

As a photographer specializing in maternity and newborn shoots, I’m always delighted when future dads show a willingness to participate in the photoshoot! They are just as much a part of this beautiful moment, and they eagerly await the arrival of their baby with the same love and anticipation. Often, they simply don’t know how to express all their emotions. But I have enough skills and techniques to guide them and show how to convey tenderness and warmth in the photos. Once the photoshoot process begins, everything usually falls into place, and the pictures turn out truly heartfelt. Those who think that men don’t enjoy being photographed have simply never been in front of my camera!

Maternity Photoshoot: A Journey from Reluctance to Joy and Happiness

A maternity photoshoot with a husband is truly something special. During each session, I see men who may not seem very enthusiastic at first, but in the end, they simply melt with joy and happiness as they hold their loved one and listen to the little one growing inside her belly. It’s so touching! I believe that a man’s reluctance to participate in a maternity photoshoot is a kind of defense mechanism. The hardest part is just getting him to the photoshoot, and after that, everything falls into place naturally.

Maternity Photoshoot: Tips on How to Convince Your Husband to Participate

  • Start the preparations early — tell him how much it would mean to you to have photos capturing this special time when you are both eagerly awaiting your little miracle. This will help the future dad mentally prepare for this “challenge,” which might seem daunting at first.

  • Create a selection of photos that you like and show them to your husband at the right moment (for example, when he’s well-fed, rested, and not busy with urgent tasks). Explain to him what you expect from the shoot and which poses you’d like to try. Reassure him that he won’t have to do anything complicated — just hold you close and follow the photographer’s instructions!

  • When choosing outfits for the maternity photoshoot, be sure to think about your husband’s attire as well! Your outfits should complement each other, and he should feel comfortable in the chosen clothes. It’s best if you can try on the outfits together beforehand. I recommend opting for simple options, such as jeans and a T-shirt or a shirt that matches your dress. As for footwear, you might consider removing socks or shoes to make the photos look more natural and harmonious.

  • If your husband is completely against participating in the maternity photoshoot, ask him to help you in a small way — like carrying some items or taking a few photos with your phone. No man can refuse his pregnant wife such a simple request! Often, once they’re in the studio and see that there’s nothing intimidating about it, they agree to take a few pictures.

  • Some men don’t mind the photoshoot itself but get overwhelmed by the entire preparation process and the fuss around it. In this case, you could suggest that he join the session for just the last 20-30 minutes to take a few pictures together.
